Q: Can you attend as a troop? A: Yes, troops are encouraged to attend. We do not have troop registration, so each scout will need to register separately. You can use the same email for each scout, but each scout will need an unique ID. Q: Do the boys have to all take the same MBs or can they choose to separate and take whatever they want? A: Scouts will set their preference for each merit badge, and the scout will be scheduled into classes based on his preferences. There are four class opportunitie -- one class on Friday night, and three classes on Saturday. Q: Will the scout be able finish all of the requirements in each merit badge? A: No, not all merit badges can be complete in one class session. Some merit badges have requirements that take days to compelte. Merit badge counselors will sign off requirements, if substantial proof is presented by the scout. Some merit badges require reports, and yes, they will have to produce a reqort to get credit for the requirements (i.e. Mammal Studies). Some merit badges require skills, and yes, the scout will need to demonstrate skills; scouts may have to prepare outside of class to learn these skills (i.e. Snigaling). It is best to read the requirements of the merit badge and to prepare in advance. Q: Scouts won’t actually do a project, but just do MBs? Will they have the opportunity to “lead/carry out” a Hornaday project? A: During the Hornaday Weekends, merit badges will be taught, and a small conservation project will be accomplished. The conservation project is NOT a William T. Hornaday Award project, but rather a good turn project. This is because a typical Hornaday project will take several weeks of planning, organization, and activity to complete. Scouts will have the opportunity to find out more information concerning what is involved in starting and completing Hornaday projects and earning either a Hornaday Badge, Bronze Medal, or Silver Medal. Q: What type of facilities are there, or is it considered primitive? Do we bring our own tents and other troop supplies? A: The Hornaday Weekend is held at Camp Karankawa in Sweeny, Texas..We camp outdoors. Scouts / Scouters will need to provide there own tents and sleeping gear. It is not primitive camping, as there is water, toilets, and showers near the campsites. All meals are provided as part of the weekend. Q: Can troops that are registered with another council participate in the Bay Area Council Hornaday Award Weekend? A: Yes. Q: Do adults Scouters need to pay the registration fee to attend the Hornaday Weekend? A: Yes. ALL adults attending the event must pay $25.00. Although the Leave No Trace Trainer Course must bring their own meals, there is a course fee. Q: Do Troops need two-deep leadership? A: Yes. This is a fundamental of youth protection within the policies of the Boy Scouts of America! Clearly, if a father and son are participating, two-deep is NOT required. YOU are responsible for adult leadership for your scout. Q: Can scouts who are Tenderfoot rank attend? A: Yes, scouts of all rank can attend. Q: Can I find out which requirements of a specific merit badge will not be completed during the Hornaday Award Weekend? A: Yes, we have done our best to let you know which requirements will be completed. Please review the merit badge section under the Weekend Info. Q: Are meals provided? A: Yes, unless you are an adult attending the Leave No Trace Trainer Course. All participants have their meals prepared and served in the dining hall. There is no meal Friday evening. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Adults taking the Leave No Trace Trainer Course must provide their own meals. Q: Is their any information available what constitutes a good Hornaday conservation project? A: Yes. Scouts have the opportunity to register to attend a Hornaday conservation project orientation session. Scouts will learn about all of the key elements necessary to select and manage a successful William T. Hornaday Award type conservation service project. Q: Is there any adult training if I'm selected to become a Hornaday advisor? A: Yes. We encourage adult Scouters who are qualified to volunteer to become a Hornaday Advisor. The Hornaday Award committee will provide training to all adults who volunteer for this role. Q: Who is my Hornaday advisor? A: Your Hornaday advisor will be assigned you upon written request to the Hornaday Award Weekend committee. Q: What is a merit badge blue card? A: The blue card is used by the Boy Scouts of America for a merit badge counselor, the scout and the troop to record which requirements have been completed on a specific merit badge. Q: What do I do with my merit badge blue cards? A: There are three sections of the blue card: (1) counselor's record; (2) applicant's record; (3) troop's record. We maintain electronic copies of the blue card, so we will NOT retain the counselor's record portion of the blue card. Scouts must get HIS OWN unit leader to sign the applicant's record portion and the troop's record portion of the blue card. A scout should then make a copy of the blue card or retain the applicant's record of the blue card. YOUR unit's advancement chair must be provided a copy of the blue card so you get credit for the merit badge. Q: Is there wireless high speed internet service available for internet and email access during the Hornaday Award Weekend? A: No. Q: Will I receive a confirmation of my registration and classes? A: After registration closes, all participants will receive a confirmation email, and detail of thier class schedule. Q: How do I register and pay? A: Attendees must register and pay for the event using the mechanisms on this web site. |
